History: | Named in accordance with an Indian legend about Mahpiyata, daughter of a Sioux chief, who tried to defend the island when it was attacked by the Chippewa. She was captured, later married a Chippewa Chief, and returned to the island. The BGN 1964 decision mistakenly applied the name to the larger island to the SW; in 2016, the BGN corrected the application to reflect the 1964 decision. |
