| History: | "The name Minnesota was originally given to the river by the Dakota Indians and was recorded as ""Waddapawmenesotor"" by Carver in 1767. In Santee dialect ""watpa"" means river and ""mi'-ni-so-ta"" means ""whitish water."" The name was given to the river for its cloudy appearance from the silt it carried. Romantics misconstrued this name and incorrectly rendered it as ""sky blue water"" and ""sky tinted water."" (KS-T33/p199)" |
